International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8th every year, is a day to honor the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is also a day to raise awareness about gender inequality and advocate for women’s rights around the world. The theme for International Women’s Day 2023 is “Choose to Challenge,” emphasizing the importance of challenging gender bias and inequality wherever it exists.
The history of International Women’s Day dates back to the early 20th century, when women in Europe and the United States were fighting for suffrage and better working conditions. The first International Women’s Day was observed in 1911, and since then, it has become a global movement, with events and activities taking place in countries around the world.
International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate the progress that has been made in advancing women’s rights and gender equality. Women have achieved significant milestones in the areas of education, employment, and political representation, but there is still much work to be done. Women continue to face discrimination and inequality in many areas, including access to healthcare, pay equity, and representation in leadership positions.
One of the key challenges facing women today is the gender wage gap. On average, women around the world earn less than men for doing the same work. In some countries, the gap is particularly wide, with women earning as little as 50% of what men earn. This disparity has significant consequences for women’s financial security and can contribute to poverty and inequality.
Another area of concern is violence against women. Around the world, women are at risk of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other forms of violence simply because of their gender. This is a violation of human rights and a significant barrier to achieving gender equality.
International Women’s Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about these issues and to advocate for change. It is a day to celebrate the achievements of women and to recognize the work that still needs to be done to ensure that women can reach their full potential.
So how can we choose to challenge gender bias and inequality? One way is to support organizations and initiatives that work to advance women’s rights and gender equality. This can include donating to charities that support women, volunteering with organizations that advocate for women’s rights, and supporting women-owned businesses.
We can also choose to challenge gender bias and inequality in our everyday lives, by speaking up when we see discrimination or inequality, supporting women in our workplaces and communities, and educating ourselves and others about the issues facing women today.
We, at Purpusly are committed to empowering women through our platform. Here are some of the women entrepreneurs from purpusly.com:
1. Nathalia Padilla: Founder of Awki Chocolates
Nathalia owns an Ecuadorian company, Awki Chocolates that was born in France and The Netherlands, and intends to use Real Chocolate as a tool for change and impact.
Applying innovation in food, Awki designed a new concept of highly nutritious chocolates in which they include knowledge of nutrition and ancestral medicine to achieve, in a natural way, different positive effects in the person who consumes it.
2. Silke German: Founder of La Comandanta
Silke has worked for more than 15 years as a consultant in brand building for transnational companies of all kinds. When she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, she was in conflict because she did not feel good about selling industrialized products that can make more Mexican people sick.
So she decided to create her own brand, a brand that she truly believes in, and that today she is proud to represent: LA COMANDANTA.
3. Paola Cardona: Founder of Terra Dulce Chocolates
Terra Dulce is a Colombian company located in the coffee triangle of Colombia. We are dedicated to producing fine artisan chocolate in the “bean to bar” trend where each of the steps of the chocolate-making process is carefully controlled from the harvest of the cocoa to its transformation into chocolate.
4. Leticia Rosales: Founder of Ceimaya
Everything started with her concerns about eating healthy food at home and teaching her children about the benefits of having an urban garden.
So she decided to open a business focused on offering healthy and delicious organic products. Mexico is a high-quality producer of varietal honey, so she knew honey products would be best. The adventure started there and now she owns a bottling firm that has received several organic certifications and is Kosher too.
On International Women’s Day, let us celebrate the achievements of women and commit ourselves to challenging gender bias and inequality wherever it exists. Together, we can work to create a world where all women have the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.
